How to compare heating oil quotes

When comparing heating oil prices, it is tempting to look only at the price per litre. That is important, but it is not the only thing that affects the final amount you may pay.

A quote with a slightly lower price per litre could still cost more if it includes a delivery charge, has a higher minimum order, or cannot deliver when you need it. This calculator helps you compare quotes on a like-for-like basis by looking at the estimated total cost.

What to include in the calculator

For each supplier quote, try to enter:

  • The number of litres you plan to order
  • The quoted price per litre
  • Any delivery charge
  • The supplier name or a simple label, such as Quote 1 or Local supplier

If delivery is included in the quoted price, leave the delivery charge as £0. If you are unsure, ask the supplier whether the price includes delivery before comparing it with other quotes.

Why heating oil quotes can vary

Heating oil prices can change frequently and may vary by location, order size, delivery route, urgency and supplier availability. A larger order may sometimes receive a better price per litre, but this is not guaranteed.

Why are the subtotal and total sometimes the same?

If no delivery charge is added, the subtotal and estimated total may be the same. If a supplier charges separately for delivery, add that charge so the calculator can include it in the total.

Should I choose the cheapest heating oil quote?

Not always. A cheaper quote may not be the best option if the supplier cannot deliver when you need it, has unclear charges, or cannot access your property easily. Compare the total cost, delivery date and supplier terms before ordering.

Can I use this calculator for red diesel or other fuels?

Yes, the same basic comparison can be useful for red diesel, white diesel, HVO or other bulk fuel quotes. Just enter the relevant price per litre and delivery charge.
